About This Project

This charming 1920s Californian bungalow in Willoughby still had many of its original features, including ornate plasterwork, timber fretwork, and leadlight windows. The owners wanted to restore the home's original beauty while making it suitable for modern family life.

Our heritage team began by carefully assessing all the original features and developing a restoration plan. The plaster ceiling roses and cornices were gently cleaned and repaired before being painted with a flat white that highlights their detail. The timber fretwork was stripped and refinished to bring out its natural beauty.

We researched period-appropriate colours and worked with the owners to select a palette that honours the home's history while reflecting their personal style. The exterior was finished in traditional bungalow colours — a warm cream with deep green trim and a terracotta roof.

Inside, we used breathable, low-sheen paints that are appropriate for older homes. The result is a home that feels authentically 1920s while being perfectly comfortable for contemporary living. The owners are delighted with how their home has been transformed.
